About
Mahabaleshwar Panchgani (M&P) Region forms a part of the Western Ghats which is a globally recognised Biodiversity hotspot. As a popular tourism destination, the region faces constant developmental pressure harming the fragile eco-sensitive environment.
BEAG’s ongoing campaign for conservation of this ecological paradise began in 1983 with ensuring delineating M&P as a separate region within the Satara Regional Plan and framing environmentally sensitive development rules and regulations for the entire region. This followed with addressing the issue of unauthorised constructions, heritage (natural and man made), pollution, protection of forests to name a few.
Our continued efforts towards conservation of this region resulted in declaring the region as an Eco Sensitive Zone (ESZ) in 2001 and engaging with the finalisation of the Sub Zonal Masters Plans.
BEAG continues to be actively involved in the protection of ‘Deemed Forests’, ecological restoration of Panchgani Tableland and intervenes when projects proposed are not in consonance with the ESZ notification.
