Heritage Maharashtra

Since 1979, the Bombay Environmental Action Group (BEAG) has been a pioneer in heritage conservation across Maharashtra. Its journey began with the creation of the first comprehensive heritage list for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which was widely praised and incorporated into Mumbai’s Development Plan. Our advocacy led to the establishment of the city’s first Municipal Heritage Committee in 1990, strengthening legal safeguards for historical buildings and precincts.

Beyond Mumbai, BEAG has actively worked to protect heritage in other cities. In Pune, BEAG has spent over 25 years advocating for the conservation of its diminishing built heritage by proposing regulations modeled on national guidelines. Similarly, in Aurangabad, we supported initiatives to finalize heritage regulations, leading to a High Court order protecting listed buildings and setting a precedent for municipalities across Maharashtra.

In smaller towns like Wai, we identified 65 heritage sites in collaboration with local groups and successfully lobbied for the inclusion of Wai under the jurisdiction of the Mahabaleshwar-Panchgani Heritage Committee. In Satara, BEAG extended this approach, securing protection for significant sites, including those linked to Shivaji Maharaj, by expanding the scope of existing heritage committees.

Cities like Kolhapur and Nashik also benefited from our interventions, with municipal corporations notifying heritage regulations in 2000. Our efforts continue to safeguard Maharashtra’s rich cultural and architectural legacy, ensuring that heritage conservation remains integral to urban development across the state.
