About Alibag
The rural coastal area of Alibag with vast farms, and wetland ecosystem areas is a popular weekend getaway for Mumbaikars.
In 1977, the Government proposed a massive chemical complex at the serein area of Mandwa. The local population of Mandwa, seriously concerned about its effects, raised the issue with a group of activists from Mumbai. This resulted in the creation of BEAG in 1978, with the first campaign being protecting the greenbelt from urbanisation.
BEAG’s consistent efforts resulted in the Government agreeing to relocate the massive project to Thal-Vaishet and Nagothane.
BEAG continues its engagement with this area by addressing issues of sand quarrying, unauthorised construction, waste management and CRZ violations.
